Kayak Care & Maintenance – Hull Repair

Scratches/Abrasion is considered normal wear and tear no matter what material the craft is made from. In some cases, there may be raised edges that can easily be cut off using a razor blade.

Dents on rotomolded plastic kayaks are sensitive to long exposures of sun and heat. Simply leave kayak in the sun for a few hours and then lightly push from inside the hull where your dent is located. On Thermoform kayaks, dents can be repaired by using a fiberglass repair kit.

Gouges, depending on depth of damage and production material, can be repaired using a fiberglass repair kit.

Kayak Care & Maintenance – Cleaning

Prolonging the life of your kayak is simple. After every paddle give the entire craft a fresh water rinse. Don’t forget to wash down hatches and rudders. Most kayak manufacturers recommend a scrub down twice a year with a mild detergent and a soft sponge, as well as spraying a corrosive blocker on any metal parts. This is especially important if the kayak is used in saltwater environments.
