Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Sandbar Boat Bash!

Published October 12th, 2016 by Bernardo

It's almost boat show season, folks, and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show wants to get locals pumped with a celebration out on the water.

Boaters can gather this weekend for the inaugural FLIBS Sandbar Bash at Laudy Lagoon—the sandbar where the Intracoastal meets Fort Lauderdale's New River—and enjoy tunes from KISS Country as well as boat show swag giveaways. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m.

"The sandbar idea was to reach out to our core group of fans, our local boaters, with a free, fun way to engage the community," Daniel Grant, a representative for the boat show, said.

The country music station's large audience of loyal listeners seemed like a good fit for the promotional partnership with FLIBS, Grant suggested.

"It seems there's a connection between country music and people that enjoy the outdoors," he said.

Giveaways will include FLIBS-branded floating key rings—a select few of which will be holding pairs of free tickets to the 2016 boat show. Representatives from Nautical Ventures, a water sports superstore, will be floating around on their kayaks and paddleboards to hand out the free goodies.

All attendees have to remember to bring is "sunblock and an anchor," Grant said.

In the past, FLIBS has aimed to involve the community with the show and raise awareness about the event through other free programming for the public, such as food truck roundups in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Grant said.

This year, the boat show has especially sought to highlight contributions from locals, from putting a call out for designers to submit their artwork for the 2016 program cover to tapping a Lighthouse Point artist to design the entranceway at the Bahia Mar.

Also new for 2016, FLIBS will be introducing food and beverage options from Great Performances, a New York City-based catering company that has worked as the official caterer for other events notable for their culinary offerings, such as the Miami Open tennis tournament and New York Wine and Food Festival.

Great Performances will offer exclusive concepts, from The Market Place (serving up create-your-own-salads) and Sandwich Shop (with their hot-pressed sandwiches), to Off The Dock (lobster rolls, fish and chips, fried shrimp, and more) and Buenos Aires (croissants, baguette and light Italian sandwiches).

In addition, local restaurants—including The Knife Steakhouse, Latin Cafe, Puntino Pizza and Sushi Maki—will have concession stands. Food trucks Killer Melts, Moty's Grill and Health Nut on Wheels will also be serving up fresh eats.

With the 2016 boat show just around the corner—it's set to take place Nov. 3 to 7—Grant said docks are already being built off Las Olas.

"We're a few weeks away from the start of the show, and everybody's in full setup mode already. That's for sure," he said.
