Smart Speed features a hull designed for comfortable ride at speeds from 0
to 22 knots. The hull has no distinct planing threshold and runs with good
fuel economy at all speeds. Speed can be adapted to sea conditions, and
this means higher safety, better comfort and the best possible way to
experience the surrounding scenery. As its sister, the 305 Coupé, the boat
can be fitted with electric engine from Torqeedo. – ‘Some people like to
drive fast when they’re at the helm, but very few like it when travelling too
fast at sea. The central idea of this model is for all those aboard to enjoy
themselves and socialize during the trip and under the open sky,’ said
Joacim Gustavsson.
With the 495 Concept we want to magnify the coupé concept, while further consolidating Nimbus’s heritage from earlier and existing coupé models.
Boats are like small worlds – society in miniature – with people and stories travelling from one harbour to the next. The sea is an element that both connects and separates people.
The primary objective of the Nimbus 495 Coupé has been to create an expedition vessel – a “voyager” if you like. For this reason, the tank capacity has been dimensioned in order to be able to cover great distances but also to be able to rest calmly in a natural harbour for a long time without worrying about the electricity supply, a source of fresh water or “black water capacity”.
Textiles are in spin-dyed acrylic, a material that is not only hardwearing and withstands salt and sun without fading but is also soft and comfortable to sit on. The colors of the upholstery are light blue and beige. The color scheme and contemporary patterns of the cushions enhance the furnishings. Interior in varnished Mahogany with textiles in light Scandinavian beige or Marine classic blue with Sunbrella light blue technical fabric as option. All lights are LED and with several points of curtesy lights.
Textiles have been carefully selected. Not only are these pleasantly attractive but also withstand sun, salt water and hard wear. On option are textiles from Sunbrella, which are renowned for withstanding hard climates and UV rays without color and performance being affected. “The cushion covers are machine washable, this being a demand among our customers,” says Joacim Gustavsson.
Using, owning and looking after a Nimbus should be simple and easy.
Simplicity can sometimes be mistaken for less comfortable and less well built, but for us it means the opposite.
Everyone aboard is to feel safe and comfortable in the knowledge that the required functionality is integrated where it should be and that it really does work. “We know that it is only then that people can really enjoy their boating and socializing aboard,” says Joacim Gustavsson.
One example is the powered canvas hood cover, which folds down into an integrated cassette in the window frame at the touch of a button – simple and elegant. When in place, the canvas roof shelters the entire cockpit, that is to say the helm, the wet bar and the dining area.
The four-seat dining table converts easily into a spare double berth. The front sofa to port can be turned so two people can travel facing front. The cockpit and aft deck fit seamlessly due to a wonderful choice of materials and the large 6-seater U-sofa aft – perfect on sunny days for those coming along for the trip.
The cockpit features a fully equipped, fiberglass wet bar with 65-liter fridge. The boat feels especially large owing to the integrated bathing platform, after-deck and cockpit being built on the same level. The spacious socializing areas make this boat perfect for entertaining friends.
Cockpit and aft deck materials are carefully selected to provide an elegant and comfortable atmosphere while being as hardwearing and maintenance-free as possible. All that is needed is to raise the hood cover when you leave the boat over-night.
We feel that there are fewer and fewer boats with experience-based designs and solutions adapted to local conditions. Nimbus has a long tradition of building coupé boats. We wish to fully realize this potential with the 495 Concept.
In the Nordic region, we have a tradition spanning several thousand years of building boats for archipelagos and local adaptations. It gives us a sense of perspective of the experience on which we are basing things here in Scandinavia knowing that the timber for the “Oseberg” ship was felled in 819. The more than 1100-year old boats from Denmark and Norway are regarded as “phylogenetically” fully developed. This means that design and the art of building had come so far that there was hardly any room for improvement. Later scientific tank-testing of models has shown that the hull lines in the Viking boats were almost optimal and this kind of knowledge was not achieved overnight.
The modern traditional clinker-built boat shares its DNA with the Viking ships. Through the slow evolution from a straight keel to boats with sterns that turn upwards and outwards, the traditional boat acquired what we now call its natural shape. And it turns out in practice that what appears natural, is very often the right things at sea.
It is our experience that boats built for a coastal landscape, with archipelagos, islands, islets, fjords and wave patterns and current conditions that can vary greatly within just a few nautical miles, have qualities that work in all waters. By translating all this experience into practice in the 495 Concept, it is our ambition to create a boat based on the best solutions that have been developed through experience of using boats in the Nordic coastal landscape. And for the 495 Concept to be an ideal vessel for those who want to cover great distances and to be out at sea or in the archipelago for a long period of time.
With the 495, the Nordic coupé boat will become relevant in the international market, particularly in the Mediterranean, the USA and the Nordic region. And with this, Nimbus is also undertaking a journey into another segment of boating. We can do this because we feel certain that boats that work in the archipelago will work anywhere.
The Nimbus 495 Concept has the space, comfort and capacity to be a home on the sea for a long period of time. To be an island of its own.
