But talk around the water cooler has us asking, “What effect do elections have on the boating market – especially coming off the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show?

Sales data aggregated from www.Soldboats.com from the past 3 presidential elections of 2004, 2008 and 2012, show that boats sold over 20 feet experience sales declines of .7% in October, 8.1% in November and 5.1% in December of the election year. If you rarify the boat size to boats sold over 50 feet the statistics change dramatically with sales declines of 13% in October, 23% in November and 9% in December of the election year. Clearly the bigger the boat, the more likely the buyer may delay his purchase decision until after the election.

There are no hard-fast rules to show when consumer confidence rebounds from a post election year, but studies have shown that pent up demand for high ticket items usually takes hold within 12-months with hi-ticket items sales rebounding in the following year.
