Or, take a leisurely journey around the banks of the Peanut Island to explore the tropical waters surrounding. You can even pack a picnic in the roomy storage space.

Renting a kayak is also a great way to try our different brands & models before making the commitment to own one. It’s a great way to explore the many ways you can enjoy this outdoor activity as there are equally as many models to choose.

Some History on Peanut Island

Peanut Island is more than just a Floridian island with peanuts on it. It is located at the Intracoastal Waterway Lake Worth inlet in Palm Beach County, Florida. Initially called the Inlet Island, the 80-acre topical island was made from excavation debris during the construction of the Palm Beach Inlet in 1918. It was renamed Peanut Island when it was intended to be a hub for peanut-shipping operations. The operation didn't kick off, but the name stuck.

Other Activities to Enjoy on Peanut Island

Besides kayaking, there are many activities to enjoy on "The Nut," as many locals prefer to call it. These are some to check out.

John F. Kennedy Bunker

This is a hidden treasure that was once made for the 35th President of the United States. Although this bunker has been closed since 2017, this bunker once contained military supplies and a phone hotline to Moscow.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is a popular activity within the clear waters of the island. In fact, Peanut Island was included in Yahoo Travel's list of top 12 U.S. snorkeling hotspots! There is a lagoon and a smaller reef on the east side, where tides sweep a dynamic variety of sea critters. Cushion starfish and reef dwellers such as angelfish and parrotfish frequent the island. Although visibility is clear, be cautious of strong currents.

Camping

Camping is legal on Peanut Island. There are more than 17 campsites with facilities such as a picnic table, grill, and tent pad. The facility features hot indoor showers, restrooms, a large fire ring, and a picnic pavilion. A single campsite costs $28 for overnight camping and $56 for an extensive campsite. It is strictly by reservation only, and a permit is required.

Walks

There is a paved trail 1.25 miles around the perimeter of the island. With clear views and beautiful sceneries, most people take about 40-60 minutes to walk around the island. The center is not accessible since it contains active dredging soil. You can take breaks at the many picnic tables available for free on a first-come basis.
